British Targets Philippines as Hub For Huge ASEAN Market

The British government is giving priority to the Philippines to become the next hub for  the huge ASEAN (Associasion of South East Asian Nation) market. UK Trade Envoy to the Philippines George Freeman MP announced yesterday his country is  expanding its economic presence within the region and encourage its business sectors to make Philippines as a  launching pad.

At the formal launch of the new British Business Center in Global City, Freeman told the reporters  that Great Britain is trying to switch its economic relations with ASEAN as UK wants less dependent  with the European  Union as their members are having  financial issues due to the impact of Bank crisis since 2008.

He said that they are prioritizing the Philippines among other ASEAN countries as trade partner because of its major opportunities. Britain leads the fastest growing country among the G-20 economies of the world.

The Philippines is the sixth among Asean countries where the UK government has established a British Business Center, which seeks to deliver services and facilitate British firms doing business in food, pharmaceuticals, engineering, agriculture, infrastructure projects particularly railways.

Based on the record, Bristish is the country’s largest foreign investor. From almost $2 billion last year, Britain sets to double bilateral trade to around 5 billion in 2016 from the its entitles to be the country’s largest foreign investor and sets to double bilateral trade to $5 billion in 2016.

British Ambassador Asif Anwar Ahmad also said that Britain has been prioritizing the winners among Asean and that includes the Philippines and its neighboring nations such as  Indonesia and Thailand while he noted that UK would like to be part in the dramatic alteration of the Philippine economy with better economic partnership.
