Mactan-Cebu
International Airport (MCIA) is a passenger terminal accepting both
international and domestic flights. This airport is intended to accommodate 4.5 million
passengers a year, however, starting 2011 it was accommodating more than of its original number passengers as it
climbs to 6.2 million accommodated passengers per year.
MCIA
was listed in the top 20 ASEAN airports last 2011 and recorded as
the country’s second busiest airport. With its present situation, it is about
time to renovate the old airport and turn into the world-class terminal to
accommodate 8 million passengers each year.
The project comprises
the construction and total rehabilitation of a new world-class passenger
terminal building in MCIA, with a capability to cater up 8 million passengers
per year and will also include the operation of the new facilities. The construction will include
related facilities and is proposed to
separately accommodate to domestic and international operations making it more
organized.
The world
competitive airport will be developed by Megawide Construction Corp. in
partnership with India’s GMR and its completion is estimated to be this coming
January 2018.
Megawide
spokesman Louie Ferrer proudly said that when the project is completed, it will
be the first resort-airport in the world as it will reflect the rich Cebuano tradition
in a state of the art design with a comforting resort-like atmosphere
conceptualized by international and Cebuano designers.
