Strong 6.1 quake Hit Southern China and kills at least 367


BEIJING—  Based on the China’s official Xinhua News Agency statement, death from the strong earthquake that hit the southern China’s Yunnan province rose to 367 while   injured people are now counts more than 1400. At the northeast of Yunnan’s capital, there are about 12,000 homes were collapsed.

According to the US Geology survey, the magnitude-6.1 quake struck China at 4:30 p.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

A resident of Zhatong, told Xinhua that the streets there were like a “battlefield after attack. She added that her neighbor’s newly build two-story building had also collapsed. She said  that she has never seen a quake as stronger than the one that struck the area in 2012 which killed 81 people.  

Xinhua reported at least 175 people were killed in the quake, with 181 are still missing and 1,402 were injured. In Ludian, there are at least 122 people dead, with another 1,300 people were injured. There are 49 people  died and 102 were injured in Qiaojia Region.

On Sunday, rescuers were still trying to reach victims in more isolated towns. The hilly region where the quake occurred is mainly agricultural with a soft foundation which is prone to earthquake.

Ludian has a population of about 429,000 where most homes are made of brick. Many of homes there were collapsed by the quake. Their telecommunication and electricity were also cut off.


Relief efforts with than 2,500 troops dispatched to the disaster region, Xinhua said. The Red Cross Society of China allocated covers, jackets and tents for those made homeless by the quake.  Red Cross branches like in Hong Kong, Macau and neighboring Sichuan province also sent relief goods.
