Japan’s Self Defense Force Chief of Staff visits Phil Army

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – As the joint Amphibious Landing Exercises of US and PH troops will take place this month, the Chief of Staff of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF), General Kiyofumi Iwata, visited the Philippine Army on September 8-9, 2014.
Gen Iwata arrived at Headquarters Philippine Army on September 8 which he was welcomed by Army Chief Lt Gen Hernando DCA Iriberri. The Japan General was accorded with military honors upon his arrival.
Ph officials’ meeting with General Iwata has tackled measures to further enhance the existing relationship between the Japan Army and Philippine Army, with the end goal of heightening the defense cooperation between Japan and Philippines.
Aside from visiting Headquarters Philippine Army, Gen Iwata also visited the Philippine Army’s Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in Fort Magsaysay where he was able to witness the Capability Demonstration of one of the Army’s elite forces, the Light Reaction Regiment. The Philippine Army’s elite forces also showcased their capabilities, particularly in terms of gears and armaments.

The 48-hour visit of Gen Iwata together with the other members of the Japan Ground Self Defense Force concluded with another visit at the 51st Engineer Brigade Headquarters in Camp General Atienza, Libis, Quezon City. 

During JGSDF Chief of Staff’s visit, the members of the 51st Engineer Brigade held a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) capability demonstration.
